The 64-page book is the next step in the Coloring Guide series (Click here for Book 1 and Book 2), offering information and educational material for crafters of all skill levels.

From the how and why behind picking colors and coloring skin and the tips and techniques for coloring hair to the helpful hints on how to create realistic looking clothing and fabric, this book presents information in an easy-to-follow format.

An included CD contains all of the hand-drawn images used in the tutorial section of the book, along with the assembly instructions for all of the projects, and a number of blank reference charts.

Copic Coloring Guide Level 2:Nature Winner!!!!!

Wow... thanks to all my readers for the kind and supportive comments for our second book in the Copic Coloring Guide series!  You guys really know how to make a gal feel special! 

When I posted about the book, my question was How do you store your markers? And I got a lot of great responses.  Most of you separate your markers into color families...some of you just jumble them all together, and some of you like to separate them into color families and then by number. 

There's no right or wrong way to store your markers... whatever works best for YOU is great. 

Many people have asked me how I store my markers... and here's my story. (Yeah, I'm going to babble on a bit before announcing the winner!  LOL)

I used to store my markers in the plastic containers that Copic sells their sets in.  I had those plastic cases all lined up in a big plastic bin so I could carry all my markers around together.  I am a bit OCD... so I always had my markers organized by color family (starting with E's) and then within the color family, I had them by number... with the lowest numbers first.  That way when I wanted a blending group, they were all right next to each other. 

Then I found these awesome cubbies...  (Thanks to Sharon Harnist who posted about them on her blog)... and I got 4 of them.  Now I store all my markers by color family only.  The numbers are all jumbled together within the family.  Now, it took me a while to get used to that, not having them in blending group order, but once I started doing "alternative blending" like we teach in this second book, it made it much easier to break out of the "blending group" rut that I had been in.  Now I experiement a lot more and really get the use out of many more colors!  I love it.

Whatever way you decide to store them...  always have fun and challenge yourself to color, play, and try new things!

YES - book 2 is out! 

I can finally share the exciting news!  Marianne and I are excited to announce that book two in the Copic Coloring Guide series is back from the printers and now shipping! 

Copic Coloring Guide Level 2: Nature

When we started working on the original Copic Coloring Guide, we knew there was a series in there somewhere... but we also knew it would be a long process and we wanted to do it right. 

We began with the Copic Coloring Guide as a "starter" book for people new to Copics or for people who wanted a review of the basics.  It gives readers the "who, what, where, when, why and how" of Copic marker use.  We also wanted to inspire readers with beautiful projects, so we included a variety of projects and split them into skill level. 

Book 1 - The Copic Coloring Guide

The book was was a resounding success and we had so much support that it was completely humbling and somewhat overwhelming. 

Book 2 - The Copic Coloring Guide Level 2: Nature

What the Copic Coloring Guide Level 2: Nature is...

We share step-by-step, photo-tutorials on how to color some of the most commonly asked-for objects.  We step-out how to color white, black, foliage, flowers, fur (and other things commonly found in nature)... how to ground your images with a base and background... we've cover alternative coloring and blending combinations (not just the what, but the why), and a whole lot more! 

We listened to reader feedback from book one and we decided to include the actual images we used in our tutorial section so that the reader can print them out and practice along with us!!!  How cool is that? 

We kept the layout crisp and clean and the tutorials clear and concise.  You will notice a common "look" in the books of the series.

Many readers wanted more tutorials.  We did just that.  We have included more tutorials and switched the focus to the coloring steps for the projects to showcase them more.  Don't worry, for those of you who still want card assembly instructions... we've included those on the CD too!  (That way you get it all!)

What the Copic Coloring Guide Level 2: Nature is not...

It is NOT a book that teaches you how to draw Manga.  It is NOT a book that will teach you how to color Manga.  It is NOT a book that teaches you how to draw.  (See a common theme here?  If in doubt... check out the title and cover page!)

I just LOVE all of the layers in this one... and the card itself is ALL about coloring!  LOL  The background is a digital image called Jungle and the little head-hunter guy is a rubber stamp called Chief Hambooli.  Both of the images and the sentiment are from Hambo Stamps.  It was so much fun to color this scene...and the instructions are included in the book!

Ink, Art, Friends, and Copic!

Phew...  I FINALLY am catching up after my week of Copic fun and instruction. 

Marianne Walker and I traveled to Berne, IN last week to teach a standard certification class to the employees of DRG Publishing (Annie's Attic and CardMaker Magazine) and a few other lucky Copic enthusiasts.  I have to say... it was one of the most entertaining groups I've worked with!  LOL  Those of you who have taken a class with me know that I can be a bit on the silly side... and Marianne... well, let's just say we had the group giggling the whole day. 

Here's a photo of me working with Tanya Fox, the EXTRAORDINARY gal who worked with us to get our book (The Copic Coloring Guide) published.  She is an amazing editor and a fabulous friend.  We had such a great time in the class... I can't wait to head back to have some more Copic fun in the future!  You can read more about the event HERE in the DRG news release. 

After an amazing day in Berne, Marianne and I drove to Indianapolis to meet up with Bianca Mandity for our very first Copic Ink and Art Workshop event.  Saturday dawned bright and sunny and the room quickly filled with excited participants and LOTS of paints, inks and supplies! 

Bianca and I tag-teamed it during the morning session where we taught 6 different techniques that combined Copic inks with a number of other mediums.  Then in the afternoon, we each taught a break-out session.  Bianca taught hand dying silks and I taught an acrylic medium canvas class. 

We asked students to be adventurous and experiment... and boy did they!  I was thrilled with the "what if" that became the motto for the day.  Every student left with oodles of new information and techniques that they can adapt and incorporate into their own artwork.  It was not only a hug success, but an amazing experience.  I can't wait to grow and expand the program! 

In other news... our book is FLYING off the shelves!  I couldn't be happier.  I'm getting lots of wonderful feedback and I am blown away by the kind comments and the overwhelming support.  Thank you ALL so very much... you are the reason I do what I do. 

I'll be back soon with more updates, some colored images (yes... I do still color sometimes LOL, and a list of classes and workshops that are coming up.

I paired up with Marianne Walker and together we share our combined knowledge and love of Copic Markers. Shading VS. Shadows - A Copic Blog Hop (with Candy!)

I was so excited to get a copy of the book and read it!  I love that it discusses the differences between shading and shadows and gives detailed information on how to add both to your work.  While I've got shading down pat, I have a tendency to struggle a bit with shadows.  In the past few months, I've stepped up my coloring game by adding harder shadows (no more land of diffused light for me)... and even adding some simple cast shadows. 

My light source is coming from the upper left... just in front of his shoulder.

I've still got a ways to go on the cast shadows thing, but with this book, I know I've got the resources to maser them!  In this sample... I wanted my doctor standing in a hallway with the light casting a shadow of him on the wall.  

While I've got the general shape right (I even followed it from the floor to the wall!)
I wasn't quite able to get the whole color/look right.  I probably shouldn't have used dots.
(If you squint, it doesn't look so bad LOL.)

Wild Guesses!

Oh you folks make me giggle!

I never expected to be "expecting" after making my blog post on Tuesday... but apparently half of you think I am.  Sorry to say... that's NOT my good news.

The other half of you folks guessed right. (I'm sure you found the link helpful right?) 

I've been asked to write for CardMaker Magazine!!! 

Each issue will feature some sort of coloring tip... from ways to use your copics, to lighting issues to different mediums.  The first issue (March) is available for digital subscription right now... and the print copy hits news stands on January 18th and includes an article on how to use Copic markers to color skin tones.  The image here is a snippet from the card projects that is included - and that super adorable image is from Mo Manning. 

This is the very first time I've been published in a print magazine (I've done lots of on-line work)... so I'm giddy beyond belief and I'm thrilled to finally share the news with my peeps.
